Releases on: Rough Trade, Felte, Pirate’s Blend, Adagio 830, Night School, Night People, La Station Radar + more SOFT RIOT (Vancouver/Glasgow) Mutant electronic post-punk by a Canadian living in Glasgow https://www.softriot.com/ Soft Riot is the project of Canadian-British, Glasgow-based synth artist Jack Duckworth (JJD). “No.” is the latest, tenth album, released in August 2023 on Possession Records (UK) and Wave Tension Records (NL). JJD has clocked in around twenty five years of musical output in various bands and projects, including half a dozen art-damaged punk and hardcore bands as well as first-wave post-punk revivalists Radio Berlin. Moving from Vancouver to London UK in the late 2000s, Soft Riot came into full being, having released over a dozen acclaimed albums and EPs over ten years and staging numerous tours around Europe. Using an arsenal of synthesizers and effects, Soft Riot’s sound is an amalgamation of JJD’s personal experience with music, containing elements of synthesiser-based film soundtracks, romantic italo-style flourishes, throbbing arpeggiations and angular, psychedelic synth-pop all tied together with an underlying tension. It is a soundscape that narrates the listener through today’s fractured, excessive landscape with hints of black humour. When playing live JJD mans no less than three synthesizers, a microphone, an on-stage mixer, and a variety of outboard effects with a large output of sweat, movement and energy. Soft Riot has toured Europe numerous times over the years, with stages shared with such peers as Absolute Body Control, Front 242, Parade Ground, She Past Away, Selofan, Ausgang, Linea Aspera, Drab Majesty, Uncanny Valley, Lebanon Hanover, Qual, Noi Kabát, Robert Görl of DAF and many more, as well as appearances at a number of essential festivals in these genres, including Gothic Pogo (DE), Ombra Festival (ES), BIM Fest (BE), Waveteef (BE), Kalabalik På Tyrolen (SE) and Weird Science (DE). Soft Riot has also done extensive remix work for other artists, including Lebanon Hanover, Agent Side Grinder, Attrition, Steve Strange (Visage), Logan Sky, Celebration (4AD), Newem and Keluar.
